Last checked: October 8, 2026 (KFC Japan press release and PR TIMES, Oct 7; KFC Japan’s official menu page)
The chicken switches from breast to a whole, juicy boneless thigh, and the breading, cooking method and sauces have all been redone. The new permanent lineup has 7 items: four core burgers, two “Premier” burgers topped with thick-cut bacon and a round omelet, and the patty on its own as “Boneless Original Chicken.” Burgers start at ¥490, and combos are ¥100 cheaper at lunchtime.

KFC Japan’s first burger, the Chicken Fillet Burger, arrived 43 years ago. The company admits that people mostly think of KFC as the place for fried chicken, and that its burgers still had room to win customers over. With more people picking burgers for lunch or a quick meal on their own, it went back to square one on recipe and method, aiming for a burger worth going to KFC for.
The new burgers were test-sold this March in three prefectures, Kanagawa, Hiroshima and Kagoshima. Feedback beat expectations, so they’re now going nationwide.
What actually changed
- Breast meat out, whole thigh inThe old burgers used chicken breast. The new patty is a whole boneless thigh, which is juicier and has more flavor. This is the biggest change.
- New breading, cooking method and saucesIt’s not just a meat swap: the breading technique, the way it’s cooked and every sauce were rebuilt to suit a burger.
- Still made by hand in each storeKFC cooks its chicken piece by piece in the restaurant, and the company says that’s what brings out the juiciness of the thigh meat.

What the developer says
According to the product developer, the old burgers fell short on size, texture and juiciness: the chicken wasn’t something you’d specifically want in a burger. Rather than adding a new flavor or a twist, the team rebuilt the recipe itself.
Full development began in late 2024 and took a year and a half, until taste, texture and even in-store operations were where they wanted them.
The four core burgers
The plain Original Chicken Burger shows off the new patty, and three sauce variations build on it.

The new thigh patty with its crunchy coating, kept simple. If you only try one, start here.
- Single ¥490
- Set ¥890
- Yokubari ¥1,190

A nod to KFC Japan’s Red Hot Chicken, made easier to eat in a burger. The new mayo-based sauce keeps the heat mild.
- Single ¥540
- Set ¥940
- Yokubari ¥1,240

With a slice of cheddar for cheese lovers. The richness of the cheese brings out the spice and crunch of the chicken.

- Yokubari ¥1,240

A sweet, soy-based teriyaki sauce with no real heat, easy for kids and adults alike.
- Single ¥540
- Set ¥940
- Yokubari ¥1,240
*Prices include tax. Sets come with fries (S) and a drink (M); the Yokubari Set adds one piece of Original Recipe chicken. Lunch prices are in the price list.
The two “Premier” burgers

For something more indulgent there’s the new Premier series: a sauce developed just for these burgers, layered with thick-cut bacon and a round omelet. The smoky bacon and mellow egg sit on top of the chicken for a bigger, more filling burger.

The Original Chicken Burger plus thick-cut bacon and a round omelet, finished with a garlic-pepper mayo made for it.
- Single ¥750
- Set ¥1,150
- Yokubari ¥1,450

The Premier Burger with cheddar added, the richest burger in the range.
- Single ¥790
- Set ¥1,190
- Yokubari ¥1,490
Boneless Original Chicken

The new burger patty is also sold on its own as Boneless Original Chicken (¥350). KFC kept the juiciness of the thigh but rebalanced the coating and seasoning for more crunch, and says it’s more filling than before. Without the bun you taste the 11 herbs and spices directly, and it also pairs well with a burger.
As of October 8 the official menu also lists “Boneless Kentucky” (¥330). The press release doesn’t say what happens to existing menu items.

The press release doesn’t give lunch hours. For reference, KFC Japan’s “Kenta Lunch” ran daily from 10:00 to 15:00 when it was last announced in May 2026. If you’re cutting it close, check the official app or ask in store.
One more reference point: on October 8 the official site listed the current Chicken Fillet Burger at ¥440 on its own and ¥850 as a set. The new Original Chicken Burger is ¥50 more on its own and ¥40 more as a set. The release doesn’t say whether the Chicken Fillet Burger and other existing burgers will stay on the menu.
How to order for less
- Want fries and a drink? Get the set. An Original Chicken Burger (¥490) plus fries S (¥290) and a medium drink (¥290) ordered separately comes to ¥1,070. The set is ¥890, so you save ¥180, or ¥280 at the ¥790 lunch price. The gap is the same for every burger (single prices as shown on the official site on Oct 8).
- Want chicken too? Get the Yokubari Set. It’s always ¥300 more than the regular set, which is ¥30 less than adding a piece of Original Recipe chicken on its own (¥330). The difference stays ¥300 at lunch.
- Show your V Point card. KFC Japan joined V Point on October 1 (1 point per ¥200 spent, before tax), and points are doubled with no sign-up until October 31. Details in our KFC V Point launch and double points guide.
- Pay with an SMBC card via smartphone tap. KFC is on Sumitomo Mitsui Card’s “up to 8% back at selected convenience stores and restaurants” list. Paying by smartphone touch gives 7% per ¥200 (tax included), or 8% with Olive Flexible Pay in credit mode. Tapping the physical card, iD and inserting the card don’t qualify, and some stores, such as those inside shopping centers, may be excluded. See our SMBC Card NL guide for which card to get.
