Gohei mochi comes in more varieties than a single skewer might suggest. At the fourth Higashi-Mino Gohei Mochi Festival at Toki Premium Outlets (第四回東美濃五平餅まつり in 土岐プレミアム・アウトレット), you can compare versions from 10 regional shops, from small dumpling-shaped pieces with sweet soy sauce to a fried version made with taro.
The festival runs on November 7–8, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, in the plaza in front of GAP. Each stall closes when its stock sells out.

What is gohei mochi?

Gohei mochi (五平餅) is a traditional regional rice food served on skewers. Some versions have small, rounded pieces; others are flattened into a broad shape known as waraji, or sandal-shaped. The rice, sauce and cooking method all vary by shop.
Soy sauce and miso are common sauce bases, with walnuts, sesame or peanuts adding their own flavor. That variety is the main reason to visit: even shops using the same basic shape can produce quite different skewers.
Higashi-Mino is the eastern part of Gifu’s Mino region, covering six cities and one town. Around 120 shops sell gohei mochi across this area. The festival brings 10 of them together, making it possible to sample several styles in one place.

The tables below group the stalls by style so you can decide what to look for. Japanese shop names are included on first mention to help you match them with signs at the venue.
Miso sauces and distinctive shapes

| Shop and hometown | What makes it different |
|---|---|
| Yamato (お食事処 やまと) Tajimi | Miso-based sauce and a shape inspired by the Mosaic Tile Museum. Aonori stands in for the pine tree on top, and cheese for the entrance. Saturday, November 7 only. |
| Konamonya (こなもん屋) Mitake | Sandal-shaped gohei mochi made with Mitake rice and Mitake miso. |
| Masamori (正盛) Kani | A fried, sandal-shaped version combining partially mashed Mino Hatsushimo rice with local taro, finished with walnut sauce. The sauce is a blend of soy and miso. |
| Wakamatsuya (若松屋) Tajimi | Large, flat rounds with a mixed-base house sauce. The shop is based in Kokei Park. |
Dumpling-shaped skewers with soy-based sauces

| Shop and hometown | Sauce and rice details |
|---|---|
| Minori (みのり) Nakatsugawa | Local rice with sweet soy sauce containing homegrown peanuts, sesame and walnuts. |
| Amakara Ena Main Store (あまから恵那本店) Ena | A sweet soy-based sauce with sesame and walnuts, paired with dumpling-shaped rice pieces. |
| Doudan (どうだん) Nakatsugawa | Chewy dumpling-shaped pieces coated in a soy-based sauce containing sugar, sesame, peanuts and walnuts. |
| Kiraku (喜楽) Nakatsugawa | An additive-free sweet-savory soy sauce made with sesame, walnuts and peanuts. |

On-site cooking is part of the event. Alongside the sauce, the texture of the rice and the degree of browning give each shop’s version its character.
Sandal-shaped skewers with soy-based sauces

| Shop and hometown | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Roto-san Chi (ロトさん家) Toki | Sandal-shaped gohei mochi with a soy-based sauce containing walnuts, sesame and peanuts. The shop is located at Michi-no-Eki Shino-Oribe. |
| Matsuya no Oyatsu (まつやのおやつ) Mitake | Rice grown by the shop, both non-glutinous and glutinous, with a sweet-savory sauce containing walnuts and peanuts. |
Chestnut sweets and regional specialties
Two additional stalls offer Higashi-Mino specialties. Look beyond the gohei mochi if you want to try regional chestnut products or pick up hoba sushi.
| Stall | Announced products |
|---|---|
| Sushiko (寿司幸) | Hoba sushi (朴葉寿司) in VIVANT collaboration packaging |
| Mototerasu Higashi-Mino (もとてらす東美濃) Toki City Tourism Association | Kuri kinton (栗きんとん), kuriko mochi (栗粉餅), kuri kinton nama shokupan (栗きんとん生食パン), and other specialties |

How to choose what to try

A useful starting point is to choose contrasting styles rather than several similar skewers. Try a soy-based dumpling version alongside a miso-based sandal-shaped one, or try Masamori’s fried rice-and-taro version instead.
- For the museum-inspired version: visit on Saturday for Yamato.
- For a sauce comparison: contrast a soy-based stall with Konamonya’s Mitake miso version.
- For a different cooking method: look for Masamori’s fried gohei mochi.
- For chestnut specialties: include the Mototerasu Higashi-Mino stall in your visit.

With each stall finishing when sold out, an earlier visit gives you more room to prioritize the shops you most want to try. The published closing time is 4:00 p.m., but it is not a promise that every stall will still have food available until then.
