Monday 12 October (Sports Day) and Monday 23 November are public holidays, so the park stays open on both; the closure moves to Tuesday 13 October instead. From Chofu Station (Keio Line), take an Odakyu Bus from stop 12 or a Keio Bus from stop 11. From Mitaka or Kichijoji Station (JR Chuo Line), take an Odakyu Bus. Get off at Jindai Shokubutsu Koen-mae or Jindai Shokubutsu Koen. Roads around the park are expected to be busy during the festa, so the park asks visitors to come by public transport. The park map is on the Jindai Botanical Gardens official site.

Why autumn roses are worth the trip

Most people think of roses as a spring thing. The autumn flush is quieter but has its own appeal: the blooms are more compact than in spring, and the colours come out deeper and richer.

A few things to look out for in the rose garden:

  • Queen of Jindai (クィーン・オブ・神代), a rose named after the gardens themselves
  • Large, mature bushes that have been growing here since the gardens first opened
  • A collection of species roses, the wild ancestors of modern garden roses

The mood shifts through the day, too. Mornings bring soft light and a strong scent, and towards dusk the low sun turns the garden gold.

Go early: 8:00 weekend opening

Roses look and smell their best from early morning through late morning. To make the most of that, the park opens at 8:00 instead of 9:30 on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 October to 1 November.

That gives you an hour and a half with dew still on the petals, and it is also the easiest way to beat the weekend crowds. If you can only go on a weekend, this is the window to aim for. Outside those dates, standard hours apply.

Events during the festa

The festa is more than a walk among the flowers. These are the programmes announced for the period. None of them needs booking; just turn up at the time:

  • Rose garden soap bubbles: 31 October and 1, 3, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 23 November, for 15 minutes each at 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00.
  • Rose concert: Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October at 11:15 and 14:15 (about 30 minutes each) on the lawn, cancelled in rain. Brazilian music on clarinet and guitar on the 10th, a violin duo on the 11th.
  • Autumn rose show: Tuesday 20 to Sunday 25 October in the exhibition room on the first floor of the Plant Hall, with cut roses and arrangements.
  • Mini-rose bonsai show: 20 to 25 October in the outdoor exhibition area.
  • Guided tour: 10, 14, 17, 18, 22, 24, 30 and 31 October at 10:30 and 13:30 (about 60 minutes). Meet at the carillon in the rose garden; volunteer guides lead the walk. Free apart from park admission, with no limit on numbers.

The Rose Café Terrace overlooking the rose garden sells rose soft-serve ice cream, juice and coffee every day of the festa from 10:00 to 16:00 (planned; last order 15:50), except when it rains. A rose shop selling cut roses will also open in the garden; its dates are to be announced on the official site.

The concerts, café terrace and shop are cancelled in rain, and the guided tours in stormy weather. The schedule above is from the official event page (checked on 24 September 2026).

Bring a charged phone. Three free digital experiences are available at the venue:

Baranona is handy if you find a rose you love and want its name. Jindai Bara Colle turns your camera roll into a small rose collection, which makes it fun to keep going back.

Tips for planning your visit

  • Check the closed days. During the festa the park closes on Tuesday 13 October and Mondays 19 and 26 October and 2, 9 and 16 November. It is open on the holiday Mondays of 12 October and 23 November.
  • Arrive before 16:00. Last entry is an hour before closing.
  • Weekend mornings from 10 Oct to 1 Nov are the best mix of fresh flowers and fewer people.
  • Check eligibility for free entry. Younger children, and junior high students living or studying in Tokyo, do not pay.

If you are turning this into a longer autumn outing, a few other deals pair well with it. Warm up after a day outdoors with the ¥300 Tokyo sento coupon, or head further afield on local JR lines with the Aki no Norihodai Pass. For a longer trip, the Shinkansen Tokudane Special 28 fares can cut the ticket price a lot.
