Like the idea of collecting regional goods? Japan’s hometown tax donation system works on a similar idea, sending you local products as thank-you gifts. Our guide to what changed in furusato nozei this October covers the new rules.

Rice-flour food and an event-only noodle dish

Furusato Komeko no Tabi (ふるさと米粉の旅) focuses on rice flour. Expect bread and crepes made with 100% domestic rice flour, plus rice-flour churros and cookies.

The standout is a fair-only dish from Ryukishin (龍旗信), a shio ramen specialist from Sakai, Osaka: shio abura soba (soupless salt noodles). It uses house-made fresh rice-flour noodles with a house-made sauce of sardines and whitebait, mussels, and a seafood salt sauce.

Tips before you go

  • Pick your zone first. Hot meals are mainly at the food trucks, Fukushima Street and the 100-Year Food area. For souvenirs, head to Umiuma Marche and the specialty goods booths.
  • Check the weather on the morning you go. The fair runs in the rain but is called off in stormy weather. The official website is the place to confirm.
  • Payment. Accepted payment methods were not listed in the information we checked. Ask at each booth. If you are still sorting out how to pay in Japan, see which credit card foreigners in Japan should get first.
  • Make a weekend of it. Looking for more free outings this season? Last month’s Setagaya Tamagawa fireworks guide and the Musashino Art University Festival guide show the kind of events we cover.
