Aoyama Bread Festival: About 60 Bakeries at UNU, Free Entry, Oct 10–12

Key Takeaways: The Aoyama Bread Festival runs October 10–12, 2026, from 11:00 to 17:00 in the United Nations University courtyard in Shibuya, with free entry rain or shine. About 60 bakeries from Hokkaido to Okinawa take part, but each sells on its own day, so the day you pick matters. A BALMUDA booth reheats bread bought at the festival for free.

If you like bread, the three-day weekend of October 10–12 has an easy plan for you. The Aoyama Bread Festival brings bakeries from Hokkaido to Okinawa to the courtyard of the United Nations University in Shibuya, right next to the weekend Farmers Market. Getting in costs nothing, and it runs even if it rains.

The catch is that the bakery line-up changes every day, and a few of the most interesting extras (workshops, a reheat booth, a café tie-in nearby) work differently from the main market. Here is what you need to know before you go.

The bakeries: what changes day by day

Around 60 bakeries take part in total, but that number is spread over the three days. Each bakery has its own day, so the stalls on Saturday will not be the same as the stalls on Monday.

The mix runs from well-known names you may already queue for in Tokyo to small neighbourhood bakeries from other regions that rarely sell in the city. Alongside the bread there are limited-edition food and drink stalls, goods for sale, and live music including jazz.

💡 If there is one bakery you really want, check the shop list on the official website before you pick your day.

BREAD LAB shop: bread from far-away bakeries

The BREAD LAB shop (購買部) is back this year. It is the answer to a simple problem: some of the best bakeries in Japan are too far away to run a stall in Aoyama. BREAD LAB picks bread from them and sells it at the festival instead, so you can try a loaf from Okinawa or Shimane without the trip.

The bread and the shops featured change by day. These are the bakeries currently planned:

Vegans and anyone curious about plant-based cooking should look for this one. Yoko Koike of SUNPEDAL, a vegan fusion restaurant, cooks dishes to be eaten with bread chosen by BREAD LAB. The bread comes from NiOR, Pan Yoruto no and Noji, rotating by day.

Workshops (advance booking)

New this year is a set of workshops hosted by Hiroaki Ikeda, who runs Panlabo and chairs the NPO Shinmugi Collection. He has spent years visiting bakeries all over Japan and writing about how their bread tastes. Each day has a different theme:

Free reheat at the BALMUDA toaster booth

This is the most practical perk at the festival. BALMUDA has a booth with the new BALMUDA The Toaster, released on September 29, 2026 as the first full redesign in the eleven years since the original. Bring bread you bought at the festival and they will reheat it on the spot, free of charge.

The redesign adds three modes: a sourdough mode, a bakery mode that merges the old French bread and croissant modes, and a steam deli mode for warming up fried food.

The New Taste at BALMUDA The Store Aoyama

Within walking distance of the festival, the BALMUDA flagship store at 5-5-3 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku runs its own tasting event, The New Taste, from September 29 to October 12. There are two paid tasting sets:

  • Sourdough set: three breads from BROD in Hiroo (country-style loaf, Le Bro, sandwich roll) with two dips and honey
  • Bakery set: THE BAKE (Hyogo) from September 29 to October 5, then Pan Stock (Fukuoka) from October 6 to 12

Prices are not in the announcement. Sign-up and details are on the event page.

Coffee carts and IITTALA tableware

Finnish design brand IITTALA sells its new Teema Coffee Collection, launched on September 2, at the festival. You can also use Teema pieces while you eat at two food carts, CAMELBACK and SAHARAN SALT CLUB, which serve coffee, sandwiches, hot dogs and more.

Tips for a good visit

  • Choose your day by bakery. Since the line-up rotates, the day matters more than the time.
  • Arrive with the Farmers Market. It opens at 10:00, an hour before the bread stalls, so you can shop for vegetables first.
  • Buy first, reheat second. The free BALMUDA reheat only works with bread bought at the festival.
  • Book workshops early. All three need a reservation.
  • Payment methods are not listed in the announcement. If you rely on cards or QR payments, check the official Instagram before you go.

The same weekend has more to do in Tokyo. The Setagaya Tamagawa fireworks guide covers October 3, and if you want a cheap way to unwind afterwards, the ¥300 Tokyo sento coupon still works at hundreds of bathhouses. Coffee fans can compare with the Starbucks Japan × Pokémon menu that just launched.
