Key takeawaysJoso’s Christmas fireworks are scheduled for December 12, 2026, with around 10,000 or more fireworks planned, including a musical display spanning over 700 metres and designs inspired by local children’s drawings. The Christmas market is free to enter, while fireworks viewing requires tickets, with a specific child admission exception in Slope Relaxed Area B.

A Christmas-season fireworks trip in Ibaraki comes with an important booking detail: the market is free to enter, but tickets are required for the fireworks viewing areas. Joso Shin Hanabi 2026 X’mas — National Young Fireworks Artists Championship (常総新花火2026 X’mas ~全国若手花火師選手権~) is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, 2026, with fireworks from 17:00 to 19:20.

The programme combines a competition between young fireworks artists, a musical display spanning more than 700 metres, and fireworks inspired by local children’s drawings. Around 10,000 or more fireworks are planned.

Check viewing areas and tickets

Bringing children? Children of junior-high-school age or younger may enter Slope Relaxed Area B free only when accompanied by a parent or guardian. The accompanying adult needs a paid ticket. This exception does not apply across all viewing areas.

A competition you can vote in

Selected young fireworks artists will compete in creative starmines and No. 10 shell displays. Starmines combine fireworks into coordinated sequences; the creative section includes musical presentation and each artist’s own approach. Spectators will also be able to vote as judges.

Musical fireworks across the sky and children’s designs

A special musical starmine is planned to spread across more than 700 metres. Another programme turns drawings by local elementary and junior-high-school students into real fireworks.

A Christmas market before the show

JOSOXmas Market is planned as a food area where visitors can spend time before the fireworks. Entry is free, but that does not mean food and drinks are free.

Before booking your trip

  • Confirm transport arrangements. Station routes, shuttle services and general parking details are not specified in the announcement. Check the official website before deciding how to travel.
  • Check what your ticket includes. Parking is explicitly included in the two special packages described above; do not assume it comes with every ticket.
  • Prepare for an outdoor winter evening. Warm layers are a sensible choice. Heating is listed for the Super VIP package, not for the viewing areas generally.
  • Check weather updates before leaving. Severe weather may move the event to the following day.

If you expect to rely on your phone for navigation throughout the outing, our d VALUE PASS and ChargeSPOT guide explains a power-bank rental option to consider separately. Rental availability at this venue has not been confirmed.

For another fireworks outing to compare, see our guide to the earlier Setagaya Tamagawa fireworks event. Its venue and transport information applies to that event, not Joso. If you are also considering an exhibition outing, the Ghibli Park exhibition guide covers a separate option; check its dates before planning a visit.

Why this location matters

The venue is near the memorial to the Kinugawa embankment breach. In September 2015, the Kanto–Tohoku heavy rains caused devastating flooding in Joso.

Local volunteers and Junior Chamber members launched Joso Shin Hanabi in 2022 to express gratitude for recovery support and pass the memory of the disaster on to younger generations. The children’s fireworks programme gives local students a direct part in this year’s event.

The committee is also accepting sponsorship and applications for fireworks with personal messages until November 15, 2026. Application information is available through the official event website.
