Tokai Kisen, the ferry company that runs the big overnight ships from central Tokyo to the Izu Islands, has announced the Tokyo Islands Sightseeing Ticket (東京諸島観光きっぷ). It is a round-trip ticket in a 2nd-class tatami room, valid for trips that depart from November 1 and return to Tokyo by December 27, 2026.

The price is ¥10,000 for adults to Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Shikinejima or Kozushima, and ¥13,000 for adults to Miyakejima, Mikurajima or Hachijojima. Children pay half. Compared with December’s regular 2nd-class fares, a Hachijojima round trip drops from ¥24,800 to ¥13,000. Booking opens at 9:30 on October 31, by phone or online.

The ticket covers the ferry only, not accommodation. Friday-night departures are excluded, and the Oshima–Kozushima route has extra blackout dates, so check the date table before you plan.

What this ticket is

The Izu Islands are a chain of volcanic islands that belong to Tokyo Metropolis. Tokai Kisen’s large ferries leave Takeshiba Pier in central Tokyo at night and reach the islands the next morning. This ticket is a round trip on those ferries in a 2nd-class tatami room, and you must come back within 7 days of leaving.

Some context: after violations including crew standing watch after drinking, the Kanto District Transport Bureau ordered Tokai Kisen to stop using some of its ships from October 9 to 28. The flyer opens with an apology to islanders and passengers, and the ticket is billed as part 1 of a new “Tokyo Islands sightseeing plan.” Separately, the Tachibana-maru on the Hachijojima route had been in dry dock for a propeller oil leak; Tokai Kisen’s October 28 notice said it was scheduled to return to service on the October 29 night sailing.

The ticket does not cover the high-speed jetfoil, and you cannot upgrade to a higher class. It is only for round trips starting from the mainland side, so island residents cannot use it for trips that start on an island.

How much you save, island by island

The flyer only says “regularly ¥13,140–¥18,760” and “regularly ¥19,800–¥24,800” (December fares). Doubling the one-way 2nd-class fare from Tokai Kisen’s fare tables gives this comparison for adults:

IslandRegular (Dec)Regular (Nov)This ticketSaving vs Dec
Oshima¥13,140¥12,320¥10,000¥3,140
Toshima¥14,640¥13,720¥10,000¥4,640
Niijima¥17,700¥16,600¥10,000¥7,700
Shikinejima¥17,700¥16,600¥10,000¥7,700
Kozushima¥18,760¥17,600¥10,000¥8,760
Miyakejima¥19,800¥18,560¥13,000¥6,800
Mikurajima¥22,180¥20,800¥13,000¥9,180
Hachijojima¥24,800¥23,240¥13,000¥11,800

Because every island in a group costs the same, the farther island is the better deal: Kozushima in the ¥10,000 group and Hachijojima in the ¥13,000 group. November’s regular fares are ¥410–¥780 cheaper per leg than December’s, so the saving is a little smaller for November trips. Child fares are always half the adult fare, so the percentage saving is the same for kids.

Ferry times: board at night, wake up at the island

The ¥10,000 group uses the Sarubia-maru and the ¥13,000 group uses the Tachibana-maru. Both leave Takeshiba at night, you sleep on board, and you arrive the next morning.

The flyer also warns that ferries heading back to Tokyo can arrive late because of traffic signal control inside Tokyo Port, so leave some slack on the evening you return.

Dates you can’t depart or return

The ticket has excluded outbound dates (you can’t leave Tokyo that day) and excluded return dates (you can’t sail back that day). They differ by route:

MonthOshima–Kozushima
no departure
Oshima–Kozushima
no return
Miyakejima–Hachijojima
no departure
Nov6 (Fri), 13 (Fri), 17 (Tue), 18 (Wed), 20 (Fri), 24 (Tue), 27 (Fri)18 (Wed), 19 (Thu), 25 (Wed)6, 13, 20, 27 (all Fridays)

The Miyakejima–Hachijojima route has no excluded return dates. On the Oshima–Kozushima route, besides Fridays, you also can’t depart on the large ferry’s no-service days (Nov 17, 18, 24 and Dec 1, 8, 15, 16, 17), and returns are blocked on 8 days. Nov 18 and Dec 16–18 are blocked in both directions.

Planning tips
  • Saturday-night departures are not excluded on either route. One easy pattern: sail Saturday night, arrive Sunday morning, stay one night and return to Tokyo on Monday.
  • You set both the outbound and return dates when you book, so make sure your return date also avoids the table above.
  • December 27 (Sun) is the last day you can arrive back in Tokyo.

What a 2nd-class tatami room is like

Tokai Kisen’s 2nd-class rooms: Sarubia-maru on the left and Tachibana-maru on the right, carpeted shared rooms with lockers along the walls and partitions at head height
Left: Sarubia-maru’s 2nd-class tatami room. Right: Tachibana-maru’s 2nd-class room.Source: Tokai Kisen ship guide

A 2nd-class “washitsu” is a shared carpeted room where each passenger lies down in a marked space. According to Tokai Kisen, Sarubia-maru’s rooms hold 4 to 18 people with partitions at face level for privacy. Tachibana-maru’s 2nd-class rooms hold about 4 to 12 people, also with partitions, and part of the area is women-only (limited spaces).

There are no beds or private cabins, but you can lie flat and sleep. Normally you could pay extra for a bunk in special 2nd class, but this ticket cannot be upgraded.

How many nights? Most islands work as day trips

The ticket is valid for up to 7 days from departure. The return sailing is the same ship turning back at Kozushima (or Hachijojima) and calling at each island, so the timetable allows these patterns:

  • Overnight ferry out, same-day return: time on the island is about 8 h 30 min on Oshima (arrive 6:00, leave 14:30), 8 h 45 min on Miyakejima (5:00 / 13:45), 5 h 10 min on Toshima (7:40 / 12:50), 3 h 20 min on Niijima (8:35 / 11:55) and 2 h 20 min on Shikinejima (9:05 / 11:25). The flyer only rules this out for Mikurajima. If you want to be sure, ask the customer center when you book.
  • One night on the ship plus 1–2 nights on the island: the most common pattern, with time to spare.
  • Kozushima and Hachijojima need an overnight stay: Kozushima arrives at 10:00 and the return leaves at 10:30; Hachijojima arrives at 8:55 and the return leaves at 9:40.

Accommodation is not included. Book island inns separately, and note that extra nights caused by a cancelled return ferry are at your own cost.

Rules to know before you book

From the flyer’s general terms
  • You must specify both travel dates when booking.
  • It is a special plan, so it can’t be combined with other discounts, and the class can’t be changed or upgraded.
  • After departure you can’t change your destination or the port you return from, and you can’t change or refund the return sailing for personal reasons.
  • Mikurajima can’t be done as an overnight day trip.
  • Cancellation: ¥500 from 29 days before until sailing time; 100% after sailing, for no-shows, or for changes after the outbound ferry has left.
  • If your return ferry is cancelled, you can take another sailing within the validity period if seats are available. If you go home by other transport, the return leg is not refunded, and extra hotel nights are your own cost.
  • At least one adult is required; children can’t book on their own.
  • Only for round trips starting from the mainland.

FAQ

Q. Who counts as a child?
Child fares are ¥5,000 for the ¥10,000 group and ¥6,500 for the ¥13,000 group, half the adult price. Tokai Kisen defines a child as under 12, plus 12-year-olds still in elementary school. Preschoolers have separate rules (see the next question).
Q. Do preschool children need a ticket?
Under Tokai Kisen’s usual rules, infants aged 1 to 6 who are not yet in elementary school, and babies under 1, travel free without their own space, one per adult. A second young child, or one who uses their own space, needs a child fare. The flyer does not say how this applies to the sightseeing ticket, so check when you book.
Q. Can I use it on the jetfoil?
No. It is only valid for a round trip in a 2nd-class tatami room on the large ferries, and the class can’t be changed or upgraded.
Q. Can I go to one island and come back from another?
No. The flyer says you can’t change your destination after departure or change the port you return from, so you return from the island you went to.
Q. When can I book?
From 9:30 on October 31, 2026 until the day before departure, by phone (Tokai Kisen Customer Center, daily 9:30–18:00) or online (membership required).
Q. Can I go and come back the same day?
The flyer only rules out overnight day trips to Mikurajima. By the timetable you can catch the same day’s return ferry from Oshima (about 8 h 30 min on the island), Miyakejima (8 h 45 min), Toshima (5 h 10 min), Niijima (3 h 20 min) and Shikinejima (2 h 20 min). On Kozushima and Hachijojima the return ferry leaves 30–45 minutes after you arrive, so plan to stay overnight.
Q. What if my return ferry is cancelled?
You can take another sailing within the validity period if seats are available. If you fly back instead, the return leg is not refunded, and any extra hotel nights caused by the cancellation are your own cost.
