Once a year, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (海上自衛隊, JMSDF) opens Tateyama Air Base (館山航空基地) in Chiba Prefecture to the public. The occasion is the Helicopter Festival in TATEYAMA 2026 (ヘリコプターフェスティバル in TATEYAMA 2026), and this year it falls on Saturday, October 10.
Entry is free, you don’t have to register, and you can see the helicopters based there from close up. Below are the times, what’s on, how to get there without a car, and the details that are still worth checking before you go.

Helicopters flying training routines over the base.
Aircraft parked on the ground so you can walk up and take a close look.
A display of aircraft equipment used by the unit.
Make your own dog tag, the identification tag (認識票) worn by service members.
Food stalls plus Self-Defense Force merchandise for sale.
Getting there: free shuttle and walking
The nearest station is JR Tateyama Station (館山駅). From there you have two options, and neither costs anything.
| Free shuttle bus | Loops between the air base, JR Tateyama Station (west exit) and AEON Town Tateyama (イオンタウン館山) |
|---|---|
| Shuttle hours | 9:30–16:00 |
| Shuttle fare | Free |
| On foot | About 35 minutes from JR Tateyama Station |
Because the shuttle also stops at AEON Town Tateyama, you can fit in some shopping on the same loop. Parking at the base is not mentioned in the details we have, so if you plan to drive, check the official page first.
If you’re putting together a few rail day trips this autumn, our guide to the Aki no Norihodai Pass for JR local trains explains how that pass works. Check whether its dates and rules fit your plans before buying.
Tips for the day
- Come for the 9:30 gate opening. That gives you half an hour to look around before the program starts at 10:00.
- No need to rush out. The gate closes at 15:30, and the shuttle keeps running until 16:00.
- Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk the 35 minutes from the station.
- Bring some cash as a backup. Payment options at the food and goods stalls are not listed.
- Check the official page before leaving for flight times, workshop details and parking.
