The basics: dates, hours and last entry

Ueno Zoo normally closes in the late afternoon. On four days in October it keeps the gates open three hours longer, so you can walk the grounds while it is genuinely dark. The window is short and it falls on a long weekend, which is worth knowing before you build a day around it.

The three-gate detail matters more than it sounds. Most of the after-dark programme sits in the West Garden, so entering from Benten Gate or Ikenohata Gate can save you a long walk at the end of a tiring day.

Admission and who gets in free

There is no special night ticket and no surcharge. You pay the standard admission, which is one of the cheapest evenings out in central Tokyo.

If your family fits the last two lines, a parent plus two primary-school children is a ¥600 evening in total. Bring ID for the senior and Tokyo-resident discounts; the zoo decides what it accepts at the counter, so check the official site if you are unsure.

What is on after dark

The main draw is simply the animals behaving differently. Plenty of species that doze through the afternoon become active as the light goes, and the grounds themselves change character — insect song instead of crowd noise. On top of that, the zoo runs four scheduled programmes.

Keeper talks and quizzes

Zookeepers introduce their animals through short talks and quizzes, under the programme title 飼育係と楽しまナイト！秋の夜に何がはじまる？. The content changes from day to day, so you do not know in advance which animals will come up — part of the appeal if you are going more than once.

Live music on two evenings

An Evening of Music (音楽の宵) takes place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October at the Shinobazu Pond Terrace in the West Garden.

Night Vivarium

The Reptile House in the West Garden runs Night Vivarium from 17:00 to 19:30 each day, with the interior kept darker than usual so you see the amphibians and reptiles in something closer to night conditions. This is the one item with a fixed daily window, so slot it in first when you plan the evening.

Plant badge workshop

On Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October only, there is a workshop where you pick plants grown in the zoo grounds, lay them out yourself and take home a button badge. It runs on a first-come, first-served basis on the day for roughly 50 people per day, and takes about 10 minutes. No advance booking is mentioned, so ask at the venue early if your children want to do it.

Eating and shopping in the evening

Food and gift shops extend their hours too, which means you can treat this as a full evening rather than a rushed loop before closing.

Limited-time menu items are also planned. Note how the rule works: the kitchens stop taking food orders at 19:00, but you can stay at your table with a drink right up to closing — so if you want to end the night sitting outside in the dark, eat first and linger afterwards rather than the other way round.

Getting there and planning your visit

The zoo publishes a congestion forecast for the four days, and the middle two — Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 — are marked as the busy ones. That is also when the live music runs, so you are choosing between atmosphere and elbow room. Friday evening or the Monday holiday will feel calmer if you are bringing small children.
