Shinjuku Machi Bar Week: hop between bars in four nightlife areas

Cover-charge-free entry at participating bars, special menus from 500 yen, and a raffle for bar hoppers.

4separate bar-crawl events

Shinjuku Machi Bar Week (新宿街バルウィーク) is back for its ninth year, and this autumn it is split into four separate events, each in a different drinking district: Shinjuku-sanchome, the streets around Shinjuku-gyoemmae Station, Shinjuku Golden Gai and Oku-Shinjuku. The first one starts on Sunday, October 18, 2026, and the last one wraps up on Wednesday, November 11.

The idea is simple. You show a ticket or pass (one event is free) and the participating bars waive their cover charge and offer special drinks or dishes at set prices. It is a low-risk way to try places you might otherwise walk past, which makes it a good fit if you are still finding your way around Shinjuku nightlife.

BAR-HOP NIGHT 2026 (Shinjuku-sanchome)

The week opens in Shinjuku-sanchome, the area around the Suehirotei variety theater. The bars here range from authentic cocktail bars to places that play rock, soul or blues, plus casual spots where you can sing karaoke. It is one of the densest bar districts in Tokyo, so one evening is enough to compare several styles.

With the ticket pass, every participating bar waives its cover charge, and you can order a special drink or food item priced at 700 yen.

Gyoen Aki Bar 2026 (Shinjuku-gyoemmae)

Gyoen Aki Bar (御苑秋バル) is the most food-focused of the four. The streets near Shinjuku-gyoemmae Station are lined with relaxed, everyday spots: French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and other Asian restaurants, plus beer bars, izakaya and bars.

This one works differently. Instead of a pass, you buy a book of six tickets, and each ticket gets you a special dish or drink at a participating restaurant. That makes it easy to split a book between friends or spread it over both nights.

If you have wanted to try Golden Gai (新宿ゴールデン街) but felt unsure about walking into a tiny bar, this is the day. The district packs about 280 small bars and eateries into a few lanes, and it has been part of Shinjuku since the postwar years.

The festival is free to join. Participating bars drop their cover charge, and drinks start from 500 yen. Visit five bars and you can enter a prize draw. There is also a women-only perk again this year; check the official site for what it includes.

Oku-Shinjuku Fes 2026

The week ends in Oku-Shinjuku, about a 15-minute walk from Shinjuku Station, around Tokyo Idai-dori and Sanbangai. It is quieter than central Shinjuku, with restaurants from many countries and cozy places where you can settle in for a while.

Show the ticket pass and the cover charge is waived at every participating venue. You can also order 500-yen menu items and special dishes.

The bar-hopping raffle

Every event has a lottery for people who make the rounds. Depending on the event, visiting three or five participating venues lets you take a draw. Prizes listed by the organizer include travel vouchers and luxury hotel stay vouchers.

The number of venues and the exact prizes differ by event, so check the details for the night you plan to go before you start.

Tickets and tips before you go

  • Buy in advance if you can. For all three ticketed events, the advance price is lower than the same-day price. Tickets are sold on e+ (eplus). If you are not sure which card works for Japanese ticket sites, see our guide to credit cards in Japan for foreigners.
  • Check the participating venue list. Not every bar in each area takes part. The list and the latest updates are on the official site and the event accounts on X, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Keep your phone charged. A night of hopping means maps, tickets and photos. A free power bank rental via d VALUE PASS and ChargeSPOT can save you if your battery runs low.
  • Plan the order. If you are aiming for the raffle, decide which bars you will visit first so you hit three or five before closing time.

Times, prices and participating venues are based on the organizer’s announcement of October 15, 2026. Details may change, so check the official site before you go. Please drink responsibly, and remember that drinking alcohol in Japan is limited to people aged 20 and over.
