For one night only, a shopping street a minute from JR Okachimachi Station becomes an outdoor stage. On Sunday, November 1, 2026, NEOKACHI WAVE puts student designers from Tokyo University of the Arts (東京藝術大学, often called Geidai) on a roughly 45 m runway laid out on the asphalt, then turns the same street into a disco floor with DJs. The arch over the street also gets an illumination that stays on every evening until January 2027.
The good news for your wallet: the fashion show and the lights are listed as free to watch. Only the street disco needs a ticket, and that ¥1,000 ticket comes with a ¥500 voucher you can spend in the shopping street afterwards.

- Date: Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Okachimachi Ekimae-dori Shopping Street (Taito City, Tokyo)
- 20:00: outdoor art fashion show by six Geidai students on the theme of future amekaji

- From 19:00: arch illumination, lit every day until January 2027
- Rain or shine: the event goes ahead, with some changes to the program and times

Art Fashion Show: a 45 m runway on the street

At 20:00, six student artists from Tokyo University of the Arts show work made around one idea: what amekaji could look like in the future. Amekaji, short for American casual, is the Japanese take on US workwear and military clothing, and Ameyoko has a similar story. It began as a postwar black market and kept absorbing foreign culture and reworking it in its own way. The event pairs that history with the eye of a younger generation.
The pieces are shown on a runway of about 45 m set up on the street itself. The approaches vary a lot: one design builds light into denim, another re-sews a secondhand wedding dress into a Lolita shape, and another is knitted without any pattern. Vintage clothing, remakes and upcycling run through all of them, and some of the outfits use items lent by shops on the street.
The six student artists
| Artist | Program (Tokyo University of the Arts) | Concept |
|---|---|---|
| 林文萱 | Graduate School of Global Arts, M1 | Takes denim apart and rebuilds it with light, so its lines glow on the night runway |
| 坂本海 | Faculty of Fine Arts, Design, 2nd year | Joins scraps of denim and T-shirts and mutates them into futuristic, Y3K-style forms |
| 滑川由記 | Graduate School of Fine Arts, Global Art Practice, 2nd year | Unpicks a secondhand wedding dress and re-sews it into a Lolita silhouette |
| 徐美玉 | Graduate school (department to be confirmed) | Three looks remade from vintage clothes and everyday items, showing Ameyoko’s multicultural mix and young people today |
| 早川せせら | Faculty of Fine Arts, Design, 2nd year | Puts the everyday side of amekaji and its over-the-top side into a single garment |
| きむらしき | Faculty of Fine Arts, Architecture, 1st year | Makes clothes simply by knitting, with no patterns or plans, looking for garments that cross borders and time |
Here are design sketches from each artist.

Shops that lent clothes for the show
If student work like this is your thing, art school festivals in autumn are another way to see it for free. Take a look at our guide to the Musashino Art University Festival 2026.
Street Disco: tickets, DJs and entry rules
Once the show ends, the middle of the street becomes a dance floor from 20:50 to 22:00. The DJs are known for genre-hopping sets.
The ticket costs ¥1,000, and every ticket comes with a ¥500 voucher for shopping or eating and drinking in the shopping street. It is meant to keep you exploring the street after the music stops.
