The festival covers a lot more than a beer garden. Here is how the organizer describes this year’s programme:

Food and drink stalls
German beer, sausages and other classic dishes, the core of the festival since it began.
Marché
German-themed food, homeware and specialty items. Some vendors are taking part in the festival for the first time.
Hands-on workshops
Expanded this year. Try German crafts and culture yourself, with activities for kids and adults alike.
Ambassador’s residence chef
A special menu from the chef who cooks at the German Ambassador’s residence, built around German ingredients and food culture.
Music
Music is listed as part of the programme. Performers have not been named yet.

The workshops are the part that has grown most this year. The organizer’s idea is that you should be able to make something with your own hands, not just eat and look around, which makes the festival a reasonable day out with children.

How the festival started

The festival grew out of the 150th anniversary of Japan–Germany relations, which was marked with events across Japan in 2010 and 2011. One of them was held at Arisugawa Memorial Park under the title Deutschland Festival – Connecting the Bond Between Germany and Japan.

Many visitors felt a one-off event was a waste, so it came back the following year. Since 2012 it has been held at Aoyama Park, and 2026 is its 15th edition.

  • Monday, Nov 2 is the only weekday in the four days. The other three are a weekend and a national holiday.
  • Free entry doesn’t mean a free day. Prices are not out yet, so set a budget for food and drink before you go.
  • Check payment options first. They haven’t been announced, so bringing some cash is the safe choice until the official site says otherwise.
