Ariake Garden Winter Illuminations
200,000lights across the mall grounds, plus a new butterfly light garden on the 5th-floor Water Terrace
Ariake Garden, the large shopping and entertainment complex on Tokyo Bay, switches on its winter lights on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and keeps them glowing until Sunday, February 28, 2027. About 200,000 bulbs cover the trees and green spaces around the mall, as they have every winter since the complex opened in 2020. This year there is also a brand-new spot: a garden of glowing butterflies on the rooftop Water Terrace, five floors up, with the bay-area skyline behind it.
Below you will find the lighting hours (they change by month), the free opening night ceremony, where to sit and eat while you watch, and how to get there by train.
What is new this winter

The headline addition is a light garden on the 5th-floor Water Terrace (水のテラス, Mizu no Terrace). Colorful butterflies made of light flutter across the open-air rooftop, and the backdrop does a lot of the work: high-rise apartments, office towers and the traffic streaming along the expressway. It is a very different feel from the classic tree-lined illuminations, more city night view than fairy-tale forest.
The familiar part of the display is still there too. The lights wrap the trees and planted areas across the grounds, including Ariake Garden Park and the promenades around the mall, so you can walk a loop rather than just look at one spot.
Dates and lighting hours

The illuminations run for about four months, covering Christmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day. The start time shifts by one hour in the middle of winter, while the lights go off at 23:00 throughout.

| Oct 31 (Sat) – Nov 30 (Mon), 2026 | 17:00 – 23:00 |

Opening night: the free lighting ceremony

On Saturday, October 31, a lighting ceremony kicks things off on the 5th-floor terraces. Admission is free. Mascots from two professional sports teams based in Koto Ward lead a countdown, all 200,000 lights switch on at once, and then an evening bubble show sends soap bubbles drifting through the lit-up sky. It goes ahead in light rain and is cancelled in stormy weather.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 17:30 – | Mascot meet-and-greet |
| 17:50 – | Countdown and lighting |
| 18:00 – | Night bubble show |
| Around 18:30 | Scheduled end |

Opening night falls on Halloween, so the area is likely to be busy. If you enjoy free evening events like this, our guides to the Shibaura Canal Festival with its free canal cruise and the Setagaya Tamagawa Fireworks cover two more.
Where to watch: the rooftop terraces

The two 5th-floor terraces, the Water Terrace and the Cloud Terrace (雲のテラス, Kumo no Terrace), have about 250 outdoor seats between them. You can bring food from the mall’s restaurants or takeout stalls and eat while looking out over the lights and the Ariake night view.
There is also a fountain show synced to music. The press release does not give show times, so check the official site if you want to time your visit around it.

Make an evening of it
Ariake Garden is more than a mall, which is what makes the illuminations easy to fold into a longer outing. Here is what is on site:
A concert or show night at Tokyo Garden Theater lets you see the lights on the way out. Eating on the terraces with takeout is the cheapest way to enjoy the view with dinner.
