JR Kyushu Brings Solar Power to the Kyushu Shinkansen
JR Kyushu, together with Kyushu Electric Power, Enbio Holdings, Fuyo General Lease and CRE, will begin supplying renewable electricity to the Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima Route. Supply is scheduled to start progressively from August 2027, marking the first time JR Kyushu has used renewable electricity to actually run its trains.
Logistics Facility Rooftops Become Power Plants
Solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of logistics facilities in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures that are developed and operated by CRE. The electricity generated there will be delivered to the Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima Route through Kyushu Electric Power. Because the project uses otherwise idle rooftop space on existing buildings, no new land needs to be cleared, allowing a meaningful volume of renewable capacity to be secured with a low environmental footprint.
The Five Companies Involved
- JR Kyushu: the electricity consumer, using renewable power to operate trains on the Kagoshima Route
- Kyushu Electric Power: delivers the electricity to JR Kyushu via the transmission grid as the retail supplier
- CRE: develops and operates the logistics facilities and provides the rooftop space
- Enbio Holdings: participates as a player in the solar generation business
- Fuyo General Lease: supports the project on the financing and leasing side of the generation equipment
What Is an Offsite PPA?
The scheme used here is an offsite PPA (power purchase agreement). Under this arrangement, a consumer receives electricity generated at a site away from its own premises, delivered through the transmission grid and a retail electricity provider. Unlike an onsite PPA, where generation equipment sits on the user’s own land, an offsite PPA is far less constrained by available land area and enables large-scale renewable procurement using idle space elsewhere. For operators like railways, which consume large volumes of power across wide areas, it is drawing attention as a powerful decarbonisation tool.
Scale of Supply and CO2 Reduction
- Railway operator: JR Kyushu (Kyushu Railway Company)
- Applicable section: Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima Route (Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo)
- Start of supply: progressively from August 2027
- Generation capacity: approx. 8,000 kW
- Annual output: approx. 9.8 million kWh
- CO2 reduction: approx. 4,600 tons per year (equivalent to about 1,800 households)
- Generation site: rooftops of logistics facilities in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures
Roughly 9.8 million kWh a year covers only part of the electricity used by a power-hungry shinkansen line, but as a pioneering case of a railway company securing its own renewable source, its significance is considerable.
Behind the Move: JR Kyushu Group Environmental Vision 2050
In February 2025 JR Kyushu formulated the “JR Kyushu Group Environmental Vision 2050,” targeting a 60% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 compared with fiscal 2023, and net zero by 2050. This renewable energy project is positioned as a concrete first step toward that goal. Rail already emits far less CO2 per passenger than cars or aircraft, and greening the electricity used for traction makes it an even lower-impact way to travel.
What It Means for Travellers
The Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima Route links Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo, with the fastest “Mizuho” services covering the distance in about 1 hour 20 minutes. From August 2027, part of the electricity powering trains on this section will come from solar. Fares, limited express charges and ticket purchase conditions will not change, and no special procedure is required of passengers, but a trip around Kyushu using passes such as the JR Kyushu Rail Pass will simply become a greener choice.
Summary
Through a five-company offsite PPA, JR Kyushu will introduce solar-derived electricity to the Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima Route from August 2027. Capacity is around 8,000 kW, annual output about 9.8 million kWh, and the expected CO2 reduction roughly 4,600 tons.
