Go to amazon.co.jp, enter your name in romaji (no katakana needed) and a Japanese address. Your home-country Amazon account, history and Prime do not transfer — create a fresh Japan account. Best of all, you can switch the whole site to English using the globe / flag icon at the top-right.
Paying when your card is foreign
International cards are hit-or-miss — Amazon Japan’s fraud system sometimes declines them, and US-issued Amazon store cards do not work on the Japanese site. The reliable workaround is to buy an Amazon Japan gift card at a convenience store and load your balance. Paidy, PayPay, carrier billing and debit cards are also accepted.
Prime Student — a great deal for international students
Eligibility is based on enrolment at a school in Japan, not your nationality. You qualify if you attend a university, graduate school, junior college, vocational or technical school in Japan (high-school students are excluded) and can show a student ID number or student email. It is much cheaper than standard Prime, and when you graduate it auto-converts to a regular paid membership — so set a reminder.
Membership fees and free-trial terms change, so confirm the current price on Amazon.co.jp before you pay (the cheaper “$69/year” figures you see online are the US program, not Japan). You can cancel any time. Free fast delivery is especially valuable if you don’t live near convenient shops.
