The whole Shimokitazawa neighbourhood becomes one giant curry crawl
135participating shops · entry is freeEighteen days, 110 curry kitchens, 21 sweets shops and a stamp rally you can join without paying a yen.
What the Shimokitazawa Curry Festival actually is
If you have been to a food festival in Japan before, you probably picture rows of tents in a park. The Shimokitazawa Curry Festival (下北沢カレーフェスティバル) works the other way round. There is no main venue. The restaurants, cafés and bars of the neighbourhood are the venue, and you walk from one to the next, eating a plate here and a half-portion there.
It started in 2012 and 2026 is the 15th edition. The organiser says more than 100,000 people take part every year, which makes it one of the fixtures of autumn in Tokyo for anyone who likes spice. Because the shops are ordinary shops, you sit down, order, pay and leave exactly as you would on a normal day — there is no ticket, no wristband and no entrance gate.

135 shops: what the line-up looks like
The curry side is up ten shops on last year. What makes the list interesting is how few of them are curry specialists. Cafés, bars, izakaya, a soba restaurant, ramen shops and Thai kitchens all put a curry on the menu for the festival, which means the range runs from a serious spice-forward plate to something you would never find on a normal menu.
Two practical details worth knowing before you go:
- Some shops sell curry bread or mini-size portions, which is exactly what you want if the plan is to try three or four places in one afternoon rather than one full meal.
- The sweets shops are part of the same event, and several of them build the sweets around spices or around the idea of curry. Alternating savoury and sweet is a legitimate way to pace the day.
The full list of 135 shops, with each shop’s festival menu, is published on the official site. Menus and prices differ by shop, so treat the site as the source of truth.

The 15th year and the Puyo Puyo x Sonic collaboration
For its 15th edition the festival has teamed up with two SEGA series that both hit their 35th anniversary in 2026: Puyo Puyo (ぷよぷよ) and Sonic the Hedgehog. This year’s main visual puts Arle and Carbuncle from Puyo Puyo, Sonic, and the festival’s own mascot Curry-man (カレーまん) in the same frame.
The catchphrase plays on both series at once — a chain reaction of 135 curry shops, run through at the speed of sound. Collaboration menus themed on Puyo Puyo and Sonic are planned at shops in the neighbourhood, and the organiser says details will be announced later on the official site. If the collaboration is your main reason for going, check the site again closer to the start date rather than relying on the announcement made so far.

Character tie-ups like this are a regular feature of Japanese seasonal campaigns, and the merchandise is often what sells out first. The same pattern shows up in transport and retail campaigns — see our write-up on the free Chiikawa tote on the Tokaido Shinkansen for how quickly limited character items move.

The free stamp rally and the limited T-shirt
This is the part that turns a meal into a game, and it costs nothing to join. You collect a stamp when you eat at a participating shop or buy something there, and you exchange stamps for curry-themed prizes as your total goes up.
| Cost to join | Free |
|---|---|
| How to get a stamp | Eat or drink at a participating shop, or buy a product there |
| First prize at | 3 stamps |
| Total prizes | 12 prizes in all by the time you reach 25 stamps |
| 25-stamp prize | Festival-limited T-shirt with this year’s main visual (Arle, Carbuncle, Sonic, Curry-man) |
| Reception and prize exchange | Shimokita Ekiue, 2nd floor of Shimokitazawa Station 12:00–20:00 |
Three stamps is a realistic target for a single afternoon — two curries and a dessert, for example. Twenty-five stamps is a different commitment altogether and effectively means returning several times across the 18 days. The T-shirt is only available to people who collect those 25 stamps during this year’s event, so it is not something you can buy on the way home.

Since prizes are handed over at the station counter and the counter has fixed hours, it is worth finishing your last shop before 20:00 on the day you plan to redeem your stamps. Note that the counter hours and each shop’s hours are separate things.
Opening ceremony on 7 October
For the first time the festival opens with an event at a live music venue, the day before the shops start serving. It is a ticketed event, separate from the festival itself.

Getting there and planning a realistic route
Shimokitazawa Station is served by both the Keio Line and the Odakyu Line, which puts it within a short ride of Shinjuku and Shibuya. That is the main reason this festival is easy to fold into a normal weekend rather than treating it as a day trip.
A route that works
- Pick your shops on the official site first, filtering by opening hours rather than by how good the photo looks. This is the single step that saves the most walking.
- Start with a full plate at one curry shop, then switch to mini portions or curry bread. Three shops on a full stomach is optimistic; three shops with small portions is comfortable.
- Use a sweets shop as the break in the middle. Spice fatigue is real after two plates.
- Finish at the station side so you can reach the prize counter at Shimokita Ekiue before 20:00.
Money and payment
The festival itself is free, but everything you eat is paid at the shop, and payment methods differ from one small independent shop to the next. Carry some cash rather than assuming every counter takes cards or QR payment. If you use QR payment day to day and have not set it up yet, PayPay is the one most widely accepted at small restaurants in Tokyo.
Making a Tokyo day out of it
Shimokitazawa is compact, so people usually pair the festival with something else nearby. A couple of low-cost options we have covered: Tokyo’s half-price sento coupon that brings a bathhouse down to ¥300 is a good way to finish a long day of walking, and if you are coming into Tokyo from another region, the autumn three-day JR local train pass at ¥7,850 is worth checking against your usual fare. For dessert deals running in parallel, see our note on the GODIVA buy one share one campaign.
FAQ
- Q. Do I need a ticket or to register in advance?
- No. Taking part in the festival is free and so is the stamp rally. You only pay for what you eat and drink at each shop. The opening ceremony on 7 October is the exception and requires a paid ticket.
- Q. What happens if it rains?
- The event is held in rain as well. Since the venue is the shops themselves, weather mainly affects how pleasant the walking between them is.
- Q. Where do I exchange stamps for prizes?
- At Shimokita Ekiue on the second floor of Shimokitazawa Station, between 12:00 and 20:00.
- Q. How many stamps do I need for the limited T-shirt?
- 25 stamps. The first prize comes at 3 stamps, and there are 12 prizes in total by the time you reach 25. The T-shirt carries this year’s main visual with Arle, Carbuncle, Sonic and Curry-man.
- Q. Where can I see the Puyo Puyo and Sonic collaboration menus?
- The organiser has said collaboration menus are planned and that details will be published later on the official festival site. Check the official site for the shop list and menu details before you go.
- Q. Is English support available at the shops?
- This is not stated by the organiser. The participating shops are ordinary independent restaurants and cafés, so language support varies. Check each shop’s page on the official site, and expect to order in Japanese at smaller counters.
