A bank account, credit, debit and points payment in a single card. But both “8% at eligible convenience stores and restaurants” and “up to 11% at 7-Eleven” come with surprisingly specific conditions. This guide turns the official fine print into something you can actually act on.

What Olive is: one card, four roles
Olive is the all-in-one service SMBC launched in March 2023. In one line: it packs a bank account, credit card, debit card and points payment into a single card (Olive Flexible Pay) plus one app. The usual problem of accumulating cards is solved by switching modes instead.
So how is it different from simply holding a bank account and a credit card separately? Practically, three things.
One card, switching between credit, debit and points whenever you like. Feeling careful this month? Set it to debit.
Free transfers to other banks a few times a month and similar perks you cannot get from a card alone.
The V Point Up Program adds to your rate at eligible stores based on which SMBC group services you use.
Which means Olive’s value is not in the card’s spec sheet but in how many conditions you can stack. Skip that and it is just another no-fee card. For the banking side in general, read our SMBC + Olive guide for foreigners in Japan and the comparison of Japan’s three megabanks alongside this.
The four payment modes
You set the payment mode of Olive Flexible Pay inside the SMBC app (三井住友銀行アプリ).
| Mode | How it charges | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit mode | Billed later | Anything where you want the full reward | Age 18+ (20+ for Gold and above). Screening applies |
| Debit mode | Instantly from your account | Avoiding overspending, or skipping screening | The +7.5% at eligible stores does NOT apply |
| Points mode | Instantly from topped-up balance | Spending down your V Points | Requires the VPoint Pay app and linking it in the bank app |
| Added payment mode | Follows the added card’s terms | Linking another SMBC card | Only for people eligible for credit mode |
The ETC card is free the first year (and stays free if used at least once a year) and family cards carry no fee — but both work only with credit mode. Under-18s (including high school students) cannot apply for credit mode and are limited to debit and points.
Four tiers and what the fees really cost
| Tier | Annual fee (incl. tax) | Base rate | Main ongoing perks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Olive standard | Free forever | 0.5% | — |
| Olive Gold | ¥5,500 ※ free forever from year two after ¥1M annual spend | 0.5% | 10,000 points each year you spend ¥1M or more |
| Olive Platinum Preferred | ¥33,000 | 1.0% | 40,000 points for ¥400k spent by the end of the third month after joining; 10,000 points per ¥1M annually (max 40,000) |
| Olive Infinite | ¥99,000 | 1.0% | 100,000 points sign-up & usage bonus; ongoing perks up to 110,000 points a year ※ the fee can be waived by meeting asset-management conditions |
If you want a sense of whether an annual fee is ever worth paying, put this next to our Amex Gold Preferred guide and JCB card guide. When in doubt, start with the standard tier — you can upgrade in the app once your usage pattern settles. Gold’s “¥1M a year for a permanent fee waiver” is the well-known ¥1M grind; do the maths on whether you will realistically hit it.
Per SMBC’s own footnote, the annual fee for your chosen tier is charged even if screening results in a card without credit functionality. It is billed on the 2nd of the second month after joining, taken from your account in debit mode — so jumping straight to a high tier carries real risk.
Standard perks: which fees disappear
These apply to every Olive holder with nothing to select. Unglamorous, but they are what quietly works every month.
| Transfers to other banks via SMBC Direct | 3 free per month for standard, Gold and Platinum Preferred; 10 free per month for Infinite |
|---|---|
| SMBC branch ATMs | No fee, 24 hours (out-of-hours fees at MUFG’s off-branch ATMs are also waived) |
| Scheduled automatic deposits | No fee |
| Scheduled automatic transfers (きちんと振込) | No fee, no limit on the number |
| Convenience-store ATM fees | As a standard perk, Infinite only (other tiers get one free withdrawal via the selectable perks) |
For sending money to individuals, SMBC’s own page points to Kotora transfers (free for amounts up to ¥100,000, including to other banks) — using that leaves your free-transfer count untouched. If you would rather pick a bank by its perks than its fees, JRE BANK (40%-off shinkansen vouchers) and Dai-ichi Life NEOBANK are two useful opposites.
Selectable perks: which one to pick
| Perk | What you get | Condition | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salary / pension deposit | 200 points a month (2,400 a year) | ¥30,000+ received per month as salary, pension, etc. | Anyone who can route their salary to Olive — the steadiest of the four |
| V Point Up Program +1% | +1% at eligible stores | Applies to spending in the month you select it | People who use the eligible stores often |
| Usage perk (ご利用特典) | 100 points a month | Month-end balance of ¥10,000+ (yen and foreign-currency deposits only) | Those who cannot move their salary but can park a balance |
| Free convenience-store ATM | One free withdrawal a month | E-net, Lawson Bank and Seven Bank ATMs | People who still need cash |
How many you may hold: one for standard and Gold, two for Platinum Preferred, three for Infinite. The month you apply and the month after allow more (two for standard/Gold/Platinum Preferred, three for Infinite). Standard and Gold drop to one from the third month after applying, so don’t be surprised when the second one disappears. After the drop the system keeps one automatically, in this priority: ① free convenience-store ATM ② usage perk (100pt) ③ V Point Up +1% ④ salary/pension — worth checking that it kept the one you actually wanted.
What counts as “salary received” (it doesn’t have to come from your employer)
This is the perk whose conditions get misread most often. The official wording:
- As a rule, your web passbook entry has to start with 給料振込 (salary transfer) or 年金 (pension). If your employer’s transfer method makes it show as 振込 instead, it is in principle not eligible.
- Even without a 給料振込 entry, a scheduled automatic deposit of ¥30,000+ in a single transaction, in the current or previous month, counts as salary received. In other words, you can keep your main account elsewhere and simply auto-transfer into Olive each month.
- Two consecutive months of receiving ¥30,000+ in one transaction makes the second month count.
- Kotora transfers and investment trust distributions do not count. This is where “I’ll just send it to myself” quietly fails.
- Money received after 15:00 on the last business day of the month is counted toward the next month.
- Even on tiers that let you hold two or more perks, this one cannot be selected twice.
Easy to miss: on the 25th and 26th of every month, convenience-store ATM fees (¥220 incl. tax per withdrawal) are waived regardless of which perk you selected. If the 25th falls on a weekend or holiday the previous business day applies; for the 26th, the following business day. If you withdraw cash around payday anyway, you can free that perk slot up for something else.
You can select from the day after the third business day of the month until month end, and whatever is selected at month end applies to the following month. You can change it as often as you like within the month. If you never select anything, “free convenience-store ATM” is chosen automatically — so leaving it alone means landing on the least valuable option. Salary routed to Olive? Take the salary perk. Convenience stores most days? Take V Point Up +1%. Then revisit monthly.
How the rate is built: 8% and the 20% ceiling
The number SMBC leads with is this: up to 20.0% at eligible convenience stores and restaurants. But it assumes (1) an eligible store, (2) payment by phone contactless, (3) six or more family members registered, and (4) the eligible services stacked to the maximum. Drop any one and you lose that slice — it is a ceiling you build up to, not a default. Broken down:
Translated into realistic terms:
- Ordinary use is 0.5% — the base rate in credit mode (1.0% on Platinum Preferred and Infinite).
- Phone contactless at an eligible store is 8% (0.5% + 7.5%). Inserting the card, tapping the physical card, iD and magnetic-stripe transactions are all excluded — the single biggest trap here.
- 7-Eleven stacks further, up to 11%. That figure belongs to Olive Flexible Pay in credit mode only: 8% plus 3%. Under the same conditions other SMBC cards top out at 10% (7% + 3%). Of that 3%, 0.5% comes as Seven Miles from showing your member code in the 7-Eleven app, and Seven Miles convert to V Points. Olive holders also get free 7-Eleven coupons a few times a year through the “Olive Day” campaign (entry required).
- Family points (six or more registered) add 5% — only relevant if your household has eligible SMBC cardholders.
- Eligible services add up to 7%. Each has its own balance or spending condition, so count how many you can actually reach before assuming anything.
The maximum assumes six or more registered family members plus every eligible service. Living alone, the 5% family slice is off the table from the start, so even fully stacked you land at 15%. Also note that paying by anything other than phone contactless drops the +7.5%, leaving base points plus 12.5%.
To capture the convenience-store side of the equation too, see our nanaco and 7&i ecosystem guide; for the card-only version of this mechanism, the SMBC Card (NL) guide; and to compare with the other megabank family, the Mitsubishi UFJ Card guide.
Stacking the “+7%” services realistically
The most misunderstood part of the 20% is “use eligible services = +7%”. Signing up is not enough; each line has a balance or usage threshold. Laid out with the actual conditions:
| Eligible service | Rate | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Olive selectable perk | +1% | Choose “V Point Up Program +1%” among the selectable perks (Platinum Preferred choosing it twice gets +2%) |
| Yen deposits in the Olive account | up to +3% | Month-end balance ¥2.5M+ → +0.5% / ¥5M+ → +1% / ¥7.5M+ → +1.5% / ¥10M+ → +2% / ¥20M+ → +3% (combined with yen time deposits at the same branch, judged at 23:59 on the last day of the month) |
| Foreign-currency deposits | up to +2% | A foreign-currency accumulation of ¥10,000+ in a single execution during the month → +1%; balance of USD 10,000 equivalent or more at 15:00 on the last business day → +1% |
| SBI Securities | up to +2% | Using 10,000+ V Points for V Point investing during the month → +1%; NISA fund holdings of ¥2M+ → +0.5%; ¥1M+ (Olive-holder exclusive) → +0.5%. All require an SMBC Card / SMBC / Olive consulting intermediary account |
| Home loan | +1% | Holding a home loan while contracted for Olive |
| Sumitomo Life Vitality | up to +2% | Enrolling in an eligible plan and running the Vitality health programme (varies by status) |
| Card loan | up to +3% | Setting the repayment account for SMBC Card Premium Card Loan (up to +3%) or Mobit card loan (up to +1%) to your Olive account |
| SMBC Nikko Securities | up to +1% | Olive contract plus Bank&Trade and other specified transactions |
| V Trip | up to +2% | Booking and paying for a domestic or overseas hotel via V Trip and actually staying (counted the month after checkout) |
| Olive Healthcare | +1% | Paying the monthly fee after the two-month free period and staying subscribed to month end |
Reading down the table, the only line that costs nothing is “selectable perk +1%”. Yen deposits mean parking ¥2.5M for +0.5%; foreign currency, funds, insurance and card loans each carry their own risk or expense. Adding financial products in order to reach “20% back” usually costs more than it returns. Count only what you already use or were going to use anyway — that order matters.
Payout rules (also easy to miss)
- Points are capped at 50,000P per card. Heavy spenders hit the ceiling here.
- Your rate is judged on your status at month end and paid against spending from the 1st to the last day of that month.
- The rate shown in the app reflects the previous month end, updated around the 20th. Conditions you meet this month will not show up immediately.
- Under Japan’s premiums and representations law, the actual rate is capped at 20% combined with other services. Anything above that is not paid out.
- You need to register an SMBC ID to use the programme. Contactless points and family points are paid separately.
If NISA itself is new to you, start with our New NISA basics. And if you plan to open accounts or apply for cards through a points site, the beginner’s guide to poikatsu and the points-site rate comparison show how much the same application can differ.
What to do with the V Points you earn
V Points can be earned and spent at Visa merchants and V Point partners, and were merged with T Points on 22 April 2024. With Olive, the points mode of Flexible Pay lets you spend them at 1 point = 1 yen for online shopping and at Visa-contactless and iD merchants (you need to top up the VPoint Pay app and enable it in the bank app). Put them into V Point investing at SBI Securities and they also feed the “10,000+ V Points used = +1%” condition above. To widen the exit further, the Eraberu Gift × au PAY route and furusato nozei pair well with this.
Which convenience stores and restaurants count
“Eligible stores” sounds like it covers everything nearby, but among the big convenience-store chains, FamilyMart is not on the list. Here is what SMBC actually lists (as of 4 August 2026). If FamilyMart is your default, building a separate route with FamiPay is faster.
| Category | Eligible stores |
|---|---|
| Convenience stores | 7-Eleven / Lawson (incl. Natural Lawson, Lawson Store100, Lawson Three F) / MINISTOP / Seicomart (incl. Taiei, Hamanas Club, Hasegawa Store) / Poplar (incl. Seikatsu Saika) |
| Fast food & cafés | McDonald’s / MOS Burger (incl. MOS Burger & Cafe) / KFC / Freshness Burger / Doutor Coffee Shop / EXCELSIOR CAFFÉ |
| Family restaurants | Gusto / Bamiyan / Shabu-yo / Jonathan’s / Yumean / Saizeriya / Sukiya / Yoshinoya / Hama-sushi / Kappa Sushi / COCO’S |
| Additional Skylark group | Steak Gusto / Karayoshi / Musashino Mori Coffee / Aiya / Grazie Gardens / Uotatsuji / chawan / La Ohana / Tonkara-tei / Yumean Shokudo / Tona / Hachiro Soba / 303 (other Skylark group restaurants are not eligible) |
Freshness Burger was added on 1 August 2026, and SMBC says the list keeps expanding. Beyond in-store phone contactless, mobile order also counts, though the eligible payment methods differ slightly from in store (for Starbucks, only Apple Pay via the app or App Clip counts — topping up a Starbucks Card does not).
Per the official footnote, above a certain amount (¥10,000 as a rule) the terminal switches to inserting the card, and that payment is excluded from the bonus (¥10,000 at 7-Eleven). The threshold varies by store. Stocking up or buying gift cards at a convenience store? Split the purchase into transactions under ¥10,000. Note too that stores inside shopping complexes may not qualify even under the same brand.
Traps that quietly cost you the reward
- Debit mode is excluded from the +7.5%. Setting it to debit “to avoid overspending” and then paying at an eligible store will not give you 8%.
- Physical-card contactless, iD, chip insertion and magnetic stripe are all excluded. It must be Visa or Mastercard contactless from the phone.
- Payments above ¥10,000 fall out of the bonus because the terminal switches to card insertion (threshold varies by store).
- Google Pay and Samsung Wallet cannot use Mastercard contactless. On those, choosing Visa is the safer route.
- Some locations, such as stores inside shopping complexes, don’t qualify even under the same brand.
- Leave the selectable perk alone and it defaults to the free convenience-store ATM. The design assumes you re-pick monthly.
- Standard and Gold drop to one perk from the third month, and the ATM perk is auto-selected first — reward hunters need to re-pick.
- The annual fee applies regardless of the screening result. Do the spending maths before choosing Gold or above.
- V Points expire. Validity is one year, extended by another year every time you earn, spend or exchange them — a full year of inactivity wipes them.
Earning V Points through SBI Securities
Olive Flexible Pay can fund credit-card accumulation (クレカ積立) at SBI Securities. From ¥100 a month, NISA-compatible, and the award rate goes up to 6% depending on your account tier. Because using SBI Securities is itself an eligible service in the V Point Up Program, it works twice: on the accumulation and on your overall rate.
Foreign-currency accumulation qualifies too, at up to 4% of the amount (standard 1.0% / Gold 1.5% / Platinum Preferred 3% / Infinite 4%). Olive holders meeting the foreign-currency deposit condition add up to another +2% via the V Point Up Program.
Credit-card accumulation isn’t only for people who want to invest — there is a well-known approach of accumulating for the points and selling straight away. How much you get per month, when to sell and what to watch for are all in our credit card tsumitate guide. New to the system itself? Start with New NISA basics. Want more ways to use the same SBI account? IPO investing and off-floor distributions run through it as well. For the spending side of the points, design it together with Welkatsu.
Opening or switching to Olive
- Download the SMBC app. The whole process happens in the app.
- Complete identity verification. Smartphone verification is supported, and SMBC states an account can be opened in as little as 70 minutes (longer when busy).
- Choose your tier and payment mode. If unsure: standard tier plus credit mode. Under-18s get debit and points only.
- Wait for the card. Campaign terms often say “opening an account may take one to two weeks” — that is the practical buffer including this step. Start early if you are chasing a deadline.
If you already hold an SMBC account, you can switch it to an Olive account in the app (switching at 18 or older requires applying for credit mode). Tier changes happen in the app too.
Check eligibility, required documents and current campaigns on the official page. Opening through our referral code also gets you ¥1,000相当 — the code is at the bottom of this article.
Official Olive account page →Campaigns running right now
Olive almost always has something running. Three worth knowing as of August 2026 (terms change — check the official pages):
- Olive Day (entry 3 Aug – 30 Sep): existing holders included. Enter and switch on one email setting, and three free 7-Eleven coupons arrive by email. The condition deadlines fall before the delivery dates, which is the part people miss — details in our Olive Day explainer.
- Summer Olive (for new accounts): V Points for opening an account and meeting conditions during the period. Check the terms on the official Summer Olive page before applying.
- Olive referral programme: both sides get a bonus when an account is opened through a referral code. Terms are on the official referral page.
Other referral offers worth pairing with Olive
Sorting out your bank account is usually also the moment to revisit fixed costs and annual fees. Three offers we handle that make sense alongside Olive. Amounts and terms change at the providers’ discretion, so confirm on the linked page.
The one that cuts a fixed cost outright. How to claim the bonus is in the Rakuten Mobile referral guide; applying for the card at the same time is covered in the Rakuten Card guide. Referral bonus: 14,000pts (MNP)
Taking the return in hotel nights instead of points. Card details in the Marriott Bonvoy AMEX guide; the airline angle in JAL × Marriott Bonvoy.
Account openings and card applications often pay more when routed through a points site. The overview is in the poikatsu beginner’s guide, and per-offer comparison in the points-site comparison.
FAQ
A. Yes — Olive standard (Flexible Pay) has no annual fee. Gold is ¥5,500 including tax, but becomes free forever from the second year once you spend ¥1,000,000 in a year.
A. The +7.5% requires Visa or Mastercard contactless from your phone (or mobile order). Physical-card contactless, iD, chip insertion and magnetic-stripe transactions are excluded, and debit-mode payments do not qualify either.
A. From the day after the third business day of the month until month end, in the app. Whatever is selected at month end applies to the next month, and you can change it repeatedly within the month. Never selecting anything defaults to the free convenience-store ATM.

A. No. The eligible convenience stores are 7-Eleven, Lawson, MINISTOP, Seicomart and Poplar; FamilyMart is not on SMBC’s list (as of 4 August 2026).
A. Base points yes, but above roughly ¥10,000 the terminal switches to card insertion and that payment loses the +7.5% eligible-store bonus. The threshold varies by store (¥10,000 at 7-Eleven), so split larger purchases.
A. SMBC states as little as 70 minutes, while campaign pages also say it may take one to two weeks. If you are chasing a deadline, start early.
