A perk for Rakuten Black and Premium cardholders. You pay one Rakuten point, the router becomes yours to keep, and the data is unlimited inside Japan with no monthly cap until the end of September 2027. No monthly fee, the SIM cancels itself at the end, and nothing needs to be returned. Applications run 29 July – 30 September 2026, capped at the first 36,000 people.
You pay one point, there is no monthly fee, the SIM cancels automatically at the end, and the router doesn’t have to be returned. None of the usual “forgot to cancel, kept getting billed” risk. With 36,000 places it is simply a question of being early. Three things will disqualify you outright, so check them first: family cardholders are excluded, anyone who already received a router through the Rakuten Business Card perk between 9 Oct 2025 and 25 May 2026 is excluded, and the payment must come from standard points (limited-time points don’t work).
What the perk is and who qualifies
Rakuten Card runs this for its upper-tier cardholders. You get a pocket Wi-Fi router plus a data SIM dedicated to that router (unlimited data plan) for one Rakuten point.
| Eligible | Primary holders of Rakuten Black Card / Rakuten Premium Card (family cardholders excluded) |
|---|---|
| Application period | 29 July 2026 (Wed) – 30 September 2026 (Wed) |
| Places | First 36,000 applicants (confirmation comes as a “特典手配メール” arrangement email) |
| Payment | 1 Rakuten point (standard points only — limited-time points don’t qualify) |
| Free SIM period | Until 30 September 2027 (Thu), regardless of when you receive it |
| Connectivity | Unlimited data in Japan (99.9% population coverage) / 5GB a month at high speed in eligible countries and regions abroad |
| After the term | The SIM is cancelled automatically. No auto-renewal, and no need to return the router |
| What the form asks | Name, date of birth, address, Rakuten point account number, phone, email — six fields |
Rakuten Mobile’s network, unlimited until the end of September 2027 (speed control may apply at busy times).
It counts as an item you purchased for one point — which is exactly why there is nothing to send back.
The SIM cancels itself on 30 September 2027. No paperwork, no return shipping, no surprise billing.
The end date is fixed at 30 September 2027 — it is not “X months from delivery”. Apply in early August and you get roughly 13 months; leave it until late September and it’s about 12. Same one point either way, so moving early literally buys you an extra month. With only 36,000 places, applying first and thinking later is the sensible order if you qualify.
On volume: data in Japan is unlimited, with no monthly or daily cap (speed control may apply at busy times). The overseas allowance is 5GB a month at high speed in eligible countries and regions, dropping to a maximum of 128kbps after that. If you currently buy a local SIM on every trip, that 5GB alone may cover it.
The router’s specs
You receive the Rakuten WiFi Pocket Platinum in white. Rakuten states explicitly that once stock runs out, a different device may be supplied.

At 103g and roughly the size of a card case, it disappears into a bag. Sixteen devices at once covers a family trip or a meeting away from the office. It supports international roaming, but note that the my Rakuten Mobile app cannot be used with this device.
Two steps from applying to using it
Six fields only. Have your Rakuten point account number (楽天ポイント口座番号) ready first — you can find it on the Rakuten Point site.
The router and a physical SIM are posted to the address you entered and work from the day they arrive. Delivery requires photo ID issued by a public authority showing your address, name and date of birth, and you must accept it in person — the courier will ask to see it.
The single point for the router is deducted from your Rakuten point account around the middle of the month after delivery completes. Only standard points count — limited-time points won’t do. Rakuten also warns that if “貯めトク” (save mode) is switched on, the deduction may fail. If you have just spent your balance down, check that at least one standard point remains.
Capped at 36,000 people, so it closes when the places are gone. Terms and stock can change — confirm the final details on the official page.

- Family cardholders are excluded — primary holders only.
- Anyone who received a router through the Rakuten Business Card perk (applications 9 Oct 2025 – 25 May 2026) is excluded. Duplicate applications are void.
- One per person. Holding both Black and Premium still means a single set.
- Not a Rakuten member at the time of application, or having cancelled the card, disqualifies you. Cancelling after receiving the perk also blocks re-application within the period.
- Minors and residents outside Japan are excluded.
- No ID, no delivery. Photo ID from a public authority is required, and refusing to show it to the courier cancels the application.
- If the parcel goes unclaimed past the holding period, you must request redelivery within two weeks of being contacted, or it’s cancelled.
- Initial defects must be reported within 7 business days of receipt — shorter than usual because the device is supplied at a preferential price.
- If you don’t complete receipt within the SIM’s usable period, the application is cancelled. Avoid applying right before a long trip away.
- Payment is by Rakuten points only. If the single point can’t be charged, the router must be returned and the SIM is suspended.
- If Rakuten judges that you have breached its terms, the SIM is suspended even during the free period.
- If a return happens due to Rakuten’s own fault, the point you paid is refunded as a Rakuten point (contact them if you have since closed your account).
- The router model may be changed at Rakuten’s discretion.
- Transferring, selling or cashing out the data SIM is prohibited — also illegal under Japan’s telecommunications law without prior notification.
- The SIM is exclusive to this router and will not work in other devices.
- If you are not a Rakuten member yet, free membership registration is required when applying for the card.
This perk is provided by Rakuten Group, Inc., not Rakuten Card. The official FAQ repeatedly asks people not to contact Rakuten Card about it. Use the dedicated enquiry form for this perk: submissions are accepted 24 hours, but email replies come on weekdays between 9:00 and 17:00. Formally, Rakuten Group provides the perk under contract from Rakuten Card.
What happens when the term ends
The SIM is cancelled automatically on 30 September 2027 regardless of when you received it. There is nothing to do — leaving it alone is fine — and the router stays yours. Rakuten also states plainly that there are no conditions attached to cancelling during the usable period, so you are not locked in if you stop using it early.
To keep using it as a pocket Wi-Fi afterwards, buy a separate data SIM (Rakuten points you to Rakuten Mobile). In effect this perk doubles as a “use it free for about a year, then decide whether to sign up” trial. If you do decide to switch, going through a referral is the better route — see below.
If you don’t hold a Premium card
The perk is limited to primary holders of the Rakuten Black Card and Rakuten Premium Card. A regular Rakuten Card cannot apply.
The Rakuten Premium Card costs ¥11,000 a year including tax, and its core value is the Priority Pass for airport lounges plus overseas travel insurance. Members-only perks like this one appear from time to time, which makes it worth considering if you already live inside the Rakuten ecosystem. How the card works and how to capture the sign-up bonus are covered in our Rakuten Card guide and the 11,000-point referral route.
A referral is usually the highest-value way into a Rakuten Card. Starting with the regular card and upgrading to Premium later is a perfectly workable order — check the conditions in the card guide first. Applying alongside Rakuten Mobile sometimes adds a further bonus.
The separate offer for regular cardholders (revolving payment)
The official page also mentions a separate campaign planned for ordinary Rakuten Card members.
| Period | 3 August 2026 – 31 August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Condition | Using “自動でリボ払い” (automatic revolving payment) for ¥1,500 or more in total |
| Places | First 2,000 applicants |
| Not eligible | Rakuten Black Card and Rakuten Premium Card members |
“自動でリボ払い” accrues interest if you leave it running. Unless you can handle the whole cycle — enabling it, using it, paying the balance off early and switching it back off — this is not worth chasing. The mechanics are in our guide to the Rakuten Card revolving campaign. Premium and Black holders are excluded from this one anyway, so focus on the one-point perk above.
About Rakuten Mobile itself
The SIM here is tied to this router and won’t work elsewhere. If what you actually want is to change your phone line, that’s a separate decision — switching to Rakuten Mobile. Referrals pay considerably better, so read the Rakuten Mobile referral guide before you act. To compare alternatives, put povo 2.0 and ahamo next to it.
